Alfred Pax
Former Coldwater resident Alfred C. Pax, 78, of Columbus, died at 6:41 p.m. Nov. 23, 2008, at his home.
He was born March 18, 1930, in New Weston, to Jacob G. and Antoinette Nordenbrock Pax. On Dec. 29, 1962, he married M. Sue Stoecklein, who died Aug. 12, 2002. On April 28, 2004, he married Mary Gemzer, who survives.
Other survivors are a son, Gregory (Tomoko), Sylvania; a daughter, Linda (Bob) Lowes, Columbus; a stepdaughter, Ann (Michael) Zucker, Wilton, Conn.; three brothers, James, Kingsville, Texas, Clyde (Ann), Charlottesville, Va., and Charles (Julie), Cambridge, Mass.; four sisters, Adeline Laihr, Columbus, Sister Joel, Notre Dame, Ind., Mary Hunt, Cleveland, and Dorothy (Ed) Stoermer, Dayton; a brother-in-law, Bob Bruns, Ottoville; a sister-in-law, Virginia, Jacksonville, Fla.; and five grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren.
Deceased are a daughter, Catherine; a stepson, Bruce Hedges; two brothers, Paul and Henry; two sisters, Grace Pax and Joan Bruns; and two brothers-in-law, Joe Laihr and Dominic Hunt.
He was a high school mathematics and science teacher and taught at Marion Local Schools for seven years. He also taught at Coldwater Exempted Village Schools for 35 years, where he served 22 years as principal and 10 years as treasurer. He was the business manager at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Coldwater, for three years.
He was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church, Columbus, and St. Bernard's Holy Name, and the Knights of Columbus and Kiwanis Club, both of Coldwater. He served the St. Marys Deanery Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Men and was a member of the Western Buckeye League and the Midwest Athletic Conference. He was a 1948 graduate of St. Henry High School and the University of Dayton, and earned his master's degree from the University of Notre Dame. He served as a company combat infantry officer in Korea, where he earned a Bronze Star.
Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Coldwater church, the Rev. Michael Watson officiating. Burial is at the church cemetery.
Calling is 9-10 a.m. Wednesday at Hogenkamp Funeral Home, Coldwater.
