Robert Henning
Retired Lt. Colonel Robert T. Henning, 93, formerly of New Knoxville and Munroe Falls, died April 10, 2013, at Otterbein Retirement Community, St. Marys.
He was born May 12, 1919, in West Salem, to Glen and Alice Thatcher Henning. He married Laura DeVoe on Dec. 26, 1941, and she died June 18, 2010.
Survivors are his children, Robin (Erv) Gleghorn of Woodenville, Wash.; Robert (Cindy) Henning Jr. of Indianapolis, Ind.; Scott (Debbie) Henning of Fredericksburg, Va., and Laurie (John) Settlage of St. Marys; 15 grandchildren, Theo Smith, Rose Henning, Tara DaVee, Todd (Paola) Gleghorn, Tyler (Charity) Gleghorn, Tim (Melinda Wall) Gleghorn, Michelle (James) So II, Greg (Samantha) Henning, Kyle Henning, Shannon Henning, Stacey Henning, Scott Henning, Jordan (Dana) Settlage, Caleb Settlage and Jesse Settlage; 10 great-grandchildren, Rachael Hill, Jared Hill, Abagail Gleghorn, Ashley Gleghorn, Alexis Gleghorn, Todd Gleghorn, Aislyn Gleghorn, Corbin Gleghorn, James So III and Archer C. Henning; and three sisters, Mildred Henning of Wooster, Renee Fry of Wooster and Patsy Bowman of Wadsworth.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Dixie Worcester, and his siblings, Onalee, Glenn, Jr., Marge and Mary.
Robert was a 1937 graduate of West Salem High School and a graduate of the University of Cincinnati. He was a mechanical engineer and retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. He had worked at the Goodyear St. Marys plant for many years and then moved to Munroe Falls, where he resided for 45 years. He retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber in Akron.
Prior to attending college and starting his career as an engineer, he served in the United States Army Air Corps, where he was a flight instructor, teaching bomber pilots how to fly B-24's and B-29's. He retired as a Lt. Colonel from the United States Air Force Reserve. He was a member of First Christian Church in Stow and attended Faith Alliance Church in New Bremen. He loved all kinds of aviation and was an expert model aircraft builder. He also enjoyed golfing and traveling to Florida for many winters.
Funeral rites are 11 a.m. Monday at the Faith Alliance Church, New Bremen, the Rev. Tom Sager officiating. Burial with full military honors is at 3 p.m. Monday at Dayton National Cemetery.
Calling is one hour prior to the funeral services at the Faith Alliance Church in New Bremen, where memorial gifts may be given to Grand Lake Hospice.
