Mercer County officials are asking residents to decide the fate of a 0.5 percent countywide sales tax that would be used to build a new $12 million, 100-bed jail west of Celina.
The current jail, built in 1939, is badly outdated and generally overcrowded, Sheriff Jeff Grey said. The old facility poses safety risks to inmates and jail staff. The old lockup also is so out of step with modern jail standards that the county risks a lawsuit by continuing to use the facility, he said. [More]

MARIA STEIN - It appears voters in the Marion Local school district will face traditional millage as well as an income tax at the March 8 primary.
That is the consensus board of education members reached during a special Monday night meeting.
A Celina man pleaded guilty last week in Mercer County Common Pleas Court to an amended charge of attempted felonious assault. The offense is a second-degree felony since it involved a police officer.
Four citations for operating a vehicle under the influence (OVI) were issued during Mercer County's first OVI checkpoint and related saturation patrol held during the weekend. One local man wound up being arrested twice.
