CELINA - A 22-year-old Celina man brandishing a knife was fatally shot by a Mercer County Sheriff's deputy early Tuesday morning after attempts to disable him with a taser failed.

When confronted by officers at Dockside Marathon at 303 S. Main St. around 3 a.m., Moses Alik allegedly raised the knife above his head and charged deputy Spencer Heinl. Heinl then discharged his firearm, striking the suspect, according to a news release from Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey.

Alik reportedly fell to the ground, and officers immediately called for emergency medical services and began life-saving measures. Alik was transported by Celina EMS to Mercer County Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead, the release states.

The original call was for a man with a knife. Heinl, who was in Celina, went to back up Celina officers at Dockside Marathon at 3:03 a.m.

When confronted by officers, Alik allegedly brandished the knife. A police officer deployed a taser, which did not disable Alik. Alik then raised the knife above his head and charged Heinl.

Heinl was placed on paid administrative leave as a matter of routine, the release indicates.

"I want to stress, this is not disciplinary leave, this is normal practice in law enforcement as investigations like this proceed," Grey said in the release.

The sheriff's office contacted the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification and requested they complete an investigation into the incident. Agents arrived on the scene and launched an investigation.

No other information is being released at this time.

Special Weather Statement issued December 10 at 6:57PM EST by NWS Wilmington OH (details ...)
Periods of light snow along with scattered snow showers will continue through the overnight and into Thursday morning. Accumulations are expected to be light, however, with dropping temperatures, slick spots will be possible for the Thursday morning commute. Some snow showers may produce a quick few tenths to a half inch of accumulation, which would increase the potential for slick spots in localized areas. If traveling, use caution, as road conditions could quickly change across short distances and on elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses.
