Fr. Jerry Schetter
We remember with heartfelt sympathy and thanksgiving the life and ministry of Fr. Jerry Schetter, 71, formerly of Saint Marys, Ohio. He died at his priest residence at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Napoleon, Ohio, on Sunday, February 22, 2026.
Fr. Jerry began his priesthood attending Saint Thomas Seminary in Connecticut and was ordained in June, 2011, at the Cathedral of Our Lady, Queen of the Holy Rosary in Toledo, Ohio.
He served as Parochial Vicar at St. Rose Catholic Church in Perrysburg, Ohio from 2011-2013.
Fr. Jerry served as Pastor of Ottoville Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and St. Barbara Catholic Church in Cloverdale from 2013 to 2022. During those years, he shepherded his parish communities with devotion, humility, and unwavering faith. His leadership extended beyond spiritual guidance; he worked diligently to rebuild St. Barbara Catholic Church and oversaw the construction of the Immaculate Conception rectory, leaving a lasting and visible legacy of dedication and stewardship.
From 2022 to present he was the Pastor at Saint Augustine Catholic Napoleon, Ohio.
Most importantly, Fr. Jerry built up the Church in the hearts of the faithful. He was a compassionate pastor, a thoughtful homilist, and a faithful servant of Christ who walked closely with his parishioners in moments of joy and sorrow alike. Whether celebrating the sacraments, offering counsel, or sharing fellowship, he carried out his vocation with sincerity and love.
Father Schetter was born November 7, 1954, in Lima, Ohio, the son of Robert and Delores (Kill) Schetter.
He is survived by his siblings: Joe Schetter of Saint Marys; Janet (Jack) Hagerman of Saint Marys; Julia (Ed) Haehn of Saint Marys. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Stacy (Andy) Schmiessing, Robert (Kayla) Hagerman; Justin (Erin) Spray; Jamie Spray; Kimberly Haehn; Angie Haehn and also by numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; by his nephew Kelly David Spray; by his brother-in-law, Bill Spray; by his uncle, Father Albert E. Schetter.
Fr. Jerry was a 1973 graduate of Saint Marys Memorial High School. He attended ITT in Dayton, and was a lifelong resident of St Marys before his calling to become a priest. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, and attended Holy Rosary parochial school. He was very involved with his community and his church. He was a member of the National Ski Patrol for many years;was a track coach, Boy Scout Leader, and was very involved with the Chamber of Commerce and Jaycees. His business career included several years as co-owner of Unique Awards and Signs, and he was a community leader before entering the priesthood. He was a gentleman with a great sense of humor who showed kindness to all. He found his true calling in the Catholic ministry.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 27, 2026, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Saint Marys, The Most Reverend Daniel Thomas, Bishop of Toledo, celebrant.
Burial will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery, Saint Marys, Ohio.
The Formal Reception of the Body of Father Schetter will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 511 East Spring Street, Saint Marys, Ohio. Friends may call from 2:30 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at the church, where a Vesper Service will be held at 7:00 P.M.
Friends may also call from 9:00 A.M.-10:45 on Friday at the church.
Memorial donations may be given to the Stained Glass Renovation Project at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 210 East Clinton Street, Napoleon, Ohio, 43545.
