Coldwater lands $85K grant to create wetlands

COLDWATER - The village has landed an $85,000 state grant to create wetlands, council members learned at Monday night's regular meeting.
Village administrator/ engineer Eric Thomas said the Ohio Department of Natural Resources funds will be used to establish five wetlands areas in the nature preserve detention area at the southern edge of town. The village of Coldwater owns all of the land including the woods in the area.
Thomas said water coming out of the woods would be filtered through the wetlands.
"Pheasants Forever agreed to provide us with the grass seed and flowering seeds for the project," he pointed out.
The ODNR Ohio River Basin H2Ohio Wetland Grant Program offers financial assistance for water quality improvement projects. Village officials previously applied for the grant in 2021 but were unsuccessful.
Thomas said he is not aware of a definite timeline. He would like to see work begin this fall with seeding taking place next spring.
"It's going to be a nice project when it's all said and done," he added.
Thomas also reported on the open house held June 6 for the South Sixth Street project.
One block will be reconstructed from East Main Street to East Walnut Street. The project will entail installing curbs, sidewalks, driveway approaches and gutters. Eight properties will be affected.
Work will commence in a few weeks.
"It was a good meeting." Thomas noted.
Mayor Doug Bertke said Memorial Day services attracted a nice turnout.
Also, the Taste of the Town and the Knights of Columbus picnic both went well, too, Bertke said, adding that the first meeting for Christmas at Memorial Park was held last week.
Thomas extended thanks to Imperial Tent Company and Bart and Mary Doll for providing, erecting and taking down tents for the Taste of the Town.
Council members also,
• learned street light poles are being painted.
• learned the large water tower will be painted next week, weather permitting.
• scheduled a safety committee meeting for 7:30 p.m. June 27 to discuss dumpsters and other items on the streets.
• learned the next limb pick up is June 20.
The next council meeting is 7 p.m. June 27 at the village hall.
