Velma Schmidt
Velma Rose Schmidt, age 74 of Chickasaw, died Saturday August 28, 2021 in Kokomo, IN.
She was born September 20, 1946 in Celina to the late Albert & Alberta (Nieport) Weitzel. On July 4, 1966 she married Virgil Schmidt in Sharpsburg and he survives her in Chickasaw.
She is survived by children, Victor & Donna Schmidt and Jerry Schmidt, and step-grandchildren, William and Travis; siblings, Paul & Mary Jo Weitzel of Ft. Recovery, Irene Clark of Piqua, Alma May of Versailles, Norbert & Betty Weitzel of Sharpsburg, Margaret & Mark Barnes of Arizona, Norma & Tom Luth of Celina, and in-laws, Vera Schmidt of Coldwater, Ivo & Rose Ann Schmidt of Coldwater, Paul & Janet Schmidt of Goshen, Ohio, Eileen Eckstein of Greenville, and Urban & Sandy Schmidt of Goshen.
She was preceded in death by in-laws, Louis May, Clem Eckstein, Virginia & Elmer Walterbusch and Charles Schmidt.
She was a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church, Chickasaw. Velma loved going to the sprint car races all over the country in the motorhome, especially her favorite track in Knoxville, Iowa. She loved to go out line dancing and in the winter she enjoyed watching the bull riding at the Mack Arena.
She and Virgil shared a love of planting the flowers and trimming the evergreens around Precious Blood Church for the past 22 years. Velma was an usher and a frequent volunteer at the church for many years. For over 40 years she worked for Rentz Brothers packaging eggs, and also helping out people with Nature's Sunshine Herbs. Velma loved spending time with her family and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Friday, September 3, 2021 at Precious Blood Catholic Church, Chickasaw. Burial will follow in Precious Blood Cemetery, Chickasaw.
Friends may call from 3:00 to 8:00 pm Thursday, September 2, and 9:00 to 9:45 am Friday at the Hogenkamp Funeral Home in Coldwater.
