Teen hurt in crash after police chase

Celina resident faces charges

By Tom Stankard
ST. MARYS - An early Saturday morning police chase reportedly ended in an accident in which a Celina man suffered non-life-threatening injuries after having been partially ejected from his vehicle.
Dominic DiSalvo, 19, reportedly was eluding an officer in the 7500 block of state Route 703, when he lost control of his gold 1998 Chevy vehicle. The vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a utility pole and rolled over, according to a St. Marys Police Department news release. DiSalvo reportedly was transported to Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys, by the Celina Emergency Squad. He was not listed as a patient this morning.
A St. Marys police officer reportedly first observed DiSalvo's vehicle at 1:32 a.m. in the city and attempted to pull him over for a left-of-center violation. However, DiSalvo failed to comply, police chief Mark Ernst said in the release.
DiSalvo continued through the city, driving at or just above the speed limit, stopping at stop signs and using his turn signals, Ernst said. He then proceeded to leave the city, westbound on state Route 703, while still being followed by the officer, who had his cruiser's lights and sirens activated.
The pursuit speed reportedly remained near the speed limit until DiSalvo reached the 7500 block of state Route 703, where he allegedly started to accelerate to speeds of 70-80 mph and lost control, the release said.
Charges are pending the outcome of the police department's investigation, the release said. The department was assisted by the Ohio State Highway Patrol with the pursuit and crash investigation.
Further details were unavailable at press time from the St. Marys Police Department, Auglaize County Prosecutor's Office or the highway patrol.
