Herman Uhlenhake
Herman H. "Ham" Uhlenhake, 94, Chickasaw and a longtime resident of Celina, died on the morning of March 7, 2015, at Mercer County Community Hospital, Coldwater.
He was born Dec. 5, 1920, in St. Henry, to John and Josephine Braun Uhlenhake. On Nov. 22, 1945, he married Bernice "Bea" Sudhoff, who passed away Sept. 8, 2008.
Surviving are their three daughters, Marlene and Harold Rome, Overland Park, Kan., Shirley (Duncan) and Joe Rutschilling, Yorkshire, and Linda and Bob Schwieterman, Chickasaw; eight grandchildren, Tammy (Brian) Menchhofer, Kerry (Julie) Duncan, Kurt (Michelle) Duncan, Nikki (Hamp) Henning, Tony (Susan) Rome, Amy Schwieterman, Kara (Greg) Sextro and Nicholas Schwieterman; 18 great-grandchildren, Brooke, Braedon and Brody Menchhofer, Lauren, Clayton and Layna Duncan, Paige, Jack and Grant Duncan, Nelle, Hamp, Gunnar and Ted Henning, Abe and Caroline Rome and Allie Bea, Lily Josephine and Jonathan Roger Sextro; a sister, Dolores (Joe) Kuhn, Celina; and sisters-in-law, Lucille Uhlenhake, St. Marys, and Marita Uhlenhake, Celina.
Also deceased are six brothers and sisters, Rose Ann (Leander) Timmerman, Hilda Schlueter and Dick, Clarence "Higgie," Paul (Joan) and Lawrence "Lefty" Uhlenhake; a son-in-law, Gary Duncan; and brothers- and sisters-in-law, Mildred, the Rev. Leonard, Werner and Walter (Laura Mae) Sudhoff, and Helen (Ralph) Klosterman.
Ham retired from Reynolds & Reynolds in 1983. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Celina, the Knights of Columbus Council 1800 and American Legion Post 210, Celina.
A U.S. Army veteran, Ham served during World War II in the European Theater with the 28th Infantry Division. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of France. He received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars.
Ham was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan and enjoyed all baseball. He was fond of big band, swing and old-time country music, especially Johnny Cash. After retiring from Reynolds & Reynolds, he was known around the area for being an accomplished furniture refinisher.
A Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Celina, Fr. Ken Alt, C.PP.S., presiding. Burial will follow at St. Marys Cemetery, Celina, with graveside military rites conducted by Celina American Legion Post 210 and VFW Post 5713.
Calling hours are 4-8 p.m. Friday and 9-9:45 a.m. Saturday at W.H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home, Celina.
Memorials may be directed to the Immaculate Conception Endowment Fund or for Masses.
