Ivan Wyer
Ivan Wyer, 87, Willshire, died at 7:56 p.m. May 12, 2013, at the Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center.
He was born Aug. 3, 1925, in Willshire, to James E. and Grace Bell Wyer. On Feb. 15, 1947, he married Joan Newlin in Willshire, and she survives.
Also surviving are his daughter, Candy (Dr. Daryl) Osborn of Wapakoneta; a granddaughter, Tracy (Joe) Albridge of Charlotte, N.C.; and a great-grandson, Peyton Albridge of Charlotte, N.C.
He is preceded in death by one brother, Albert Wyer and a half-sister, Elizabeth Rinard.
Ivan's childhood activities included playing at the river and swimming at the quarry in Willshire. He attended Willshire schools, graduating in 1943. He served the town of Willshire in several capacities.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Pacific during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Ohio City United Methodist Church, lifelong member of both the American Legion Harry J. Reynolds Post #191 of Spencerville, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5803 of Van Wert. He also served as Second District Commander and Assistant Sergeant of Arms for the Department of Ohio. He is a member of the Willshire Volunteer Fire Department. He worked on the Nickel Plate Railroad for 15 years and he retired from Parkway schools in 1988.
Funeral service are 1 p.m. Thursday at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur, the Rev. Mark Rutledge officiating. Burial with military graveside honors by the American Legion Harry J. Reynolds Post #191 will follow at Willshire Cemetery.
Calling is 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur.
Memorials may be given to Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center and Wren EMS.
