Grand Lake reliever and Fort Recovery graduate Alex Dues was named the Lou Laslo Pitcher of the Year by the coaches of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League in leading the league with six wins and five saves.
The amazing turnaround of the Grand Lake Mariners this season paid dividends as the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League bestowed its postseason honors on Monday.
Fort Recovery graduate Alex Dues was named the Lou Laslo Pitcher of the of the Year. The submarine-style pitcher, who will head to Ball State this fall after two seasons at Marietta College, was potent when coming out of the bullpen this season. Dues pitched 38 1/3 innings in 23 appearances, leading the GLSCL in victories in going 6-0 and in saves with five. Dues posted a 2.11 earned run average with 29 strikeouts and 14 walks with a 1.12 WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched).
Grand Lake head coach Mike Roberts was honored as the Joe Carbone Manager of the Year in helping the Mariners to a 22-win turnaround in winning the GLSCL South Division with a 33-9 record.
First-year Mariners head coach Mike Roberts was named the Joe Carbone Manager of the Year. Roberts, who coached the University of North Carolina for 21 seasons and later in the Cape Cod League, took a team that won just 11 games last season and posted a 33-9 regular season record in winning the South Division by 11 games. The 33 wins tie the league mark set by the 1988 Toledo Glass Sox, 2000 Northern Ohio Baseball Club and the 2023 Muskegon Clippers. Grand Lake posted the best record in the GLSCL and holds home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
Grand Lake outfielder Matthew Aldridge was named for the Ron Miller Top Player Prospect award in batting .351 with six home runs in 20 games before suffering a season-ending injury.
Outfielder Matthew Aldridge received the Ron Miller Top Player Prospect award. Aldridge appeared in 20 games before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury in late June. In those 20 games, which he was able to qualify for the league batting title, Aldridge batted .351, good for fifth in the league, finished second in home runs with six and added 31 runs, 22 RBI and 11 stolen bases. Aldridge was the only position player to earn GLSCL Player of the Week honors twice this season.
Lima, winner of the North Division, collected the other two major awards as Locos third baseman/shortstop Cameron Greene was named the Gary Henschen Player of the Year. Greene finished second in batting with a .395 average to go with a league-best 51 hits and 43 runs scored.
Locos pitcher Ryne Michaeloff was named the Tony Lucadello Top Pitcher Prospect. Michaeloff went 3-0 with three saves with a league-best 0.79 ERA. Michaeloff struck out 24 batters in just 22 1/3 innings.
The GLSCL also released its all-league teams. Dues was named the first-team closer while teammates Huston Dunn and Luke Wildes were named first team second baseman and designated hitter, respectively.
On the second team, Mariner outfielder Brandt Kendall was joined by starting pitcher Taylor Seay and relief pitcher Bryce Eggleton.
