The Mercer County Bar Association held its annual law essay contest presentation ceremony on Friday, Law Day, in the common pleas courtroom. Mercer County eighth graders had the opportunity to submit an essay reflecting on the rule of law and the American Dream. Twenty-five essays were submitted. Three Marion Local students were named the winners - Haylee Schwieterman, pictured second from right, first place, who won $300 and a one-day job shadow with a county official of her choosing; Paige Stachler, far right, second place, $200; and Honor Fledderjohann, second from left, third place, $100. Also pictured is Marion Local language arts teacher Laura Wolters. On May 1, 1958, the United States celebrated its first Law Day, as ordered by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Since that inaugural observance, Law Day has served as an annual reminder of the rule of law and its importance in promoting liberty and justice.
