Cash Patrick fell just short of his intended goal, but he leaves plenty of room to grow over his next two seasons.
The Celina sophomore finished third in the Division II 285-pound weight, defeating Jaxin Stancombe of Madison Comprehensive 4-0 in his final match of the day on Sunday at the Schottenstein Center.
Patrick finishes at 57-1, the most wins by a Celina wrestler in a season, and his third-place finish ranks just behind Jim Gray's runner-up finish at 145 pounds in the 1982 Class AAA state final as best among Bulldogs.
Patrick opened his second day of competition on Saturday against Perry's Trent Taylor in the championship quarterfinals. Taylor battled Patrick through the first period, but then Patrick was able to get another takedown at the end of the mat and then locked in Taylor into a pinning situation. The referee slapped his hand with 33 seconds remaining in the second period to not only send Patrick to Saturday evening's semifinal, but secure at least a sixth-place finish.
Patrick faced Canton South's Deangelo Spear in the semifinals. An early stalling warning for Patrick prove to be important as the two wrestlers were scoreless after two periods. Thirty-six seconds into the third period, Patrick was called for stalling again, giving Spear a penalty point. Patrick then opened to let up Spear to make it a 2-0 match. Patrick scored another takedown to take a 3-2 lead with 1:04 remaining. Then within a seven-second span, Patrick was called for stalling twice more, resulting in three penalty points for Spear, followed an escape with 32 seconds remaining to make it 5-3. Spear, who was called for stalling in the second period, was hit with his own stalling call to give Patrick another point, but a late takedown gave Spear a 9-4 win to send Patrick to the consolation bracket Sunday morning.
First off Sunday morning was a semifinal matchup with Logan McClellan of Tri-Valley. After a scoreless opening period, McClellan chose the down position to start the second period and got an escape. Patrick recovered and got a takedown to go up 3-1 before McClellan broke free late in the period to cut Patrick's lead to 3-2. Patrick chose to start the third period neutral and got a takedown with 1:26 remaining. McClellan escaped with 61 seconds remaining, but Patrick iced the match with a takedown with 15 seconds left, conceding an escape at the end to take a 9-4 win to move into the third place match.
The third place match was a rematch of the Norwalk District final when Patrick pinned Stancombe to become Celina's first district champion in 44 years. After a scoreless opening period, Patrick scored an escape with 24 seconds remaining in the second to take a 1-0 lead. After a neutral start in the third, Patrick held off Stancombe before scoring a takedown with three seconds remaining to win 4-0
For the three other area state qualifiers who made it to Saturday, their seasons ended in the day's opening round of consolations.
Celina junior Payten Staugler faced Benedictine's Devion Coffin in the second round of Division II 132-pound consolations on Saturday, with Coffin picking up a 17-1 technical fall victory to end Staugler's season at 22-9.
Parkway senior Jaden Green took on Barnesville's Hines Ford in a Division III 175-pound consolation match. Ford pinned Green in 2:06, ending Green's season at 44-5, setting a school record for wins in a season.
St. Marys' Kayah Montague finished her season at 41-13 after losing a 12-1 major decision over Maysville's Audrey Crooks in the second consolation round of the girls' 120-pound bracket.
