New Bremen's Jaylen Powell, seated center, will attend the College of Mount Saint Joseph and play fooball for the Lions next season.

NEW BREMEN - It took a lot of hard work, dedication and help for New Bremen's Jaylen Powell to get to this point, and the senior Cardinal hopes to take that into his next step as a member of the Mount St. Joseph football team in Cincinnati.

"(I want to thank) all my coaches, from the second grade all the way up. My dad got me into (football), my mom and stepmom, all of them supported me all the way through," Powell said at his signing day.

The New Bremen linebacker racked up 44 tackles, four tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries with a sack and interception each in 2025. He ended the season as an All-MAC honorable mention as the Cardinals finished 6-5. It's a defensive position he looks to continue in his athletic career while he pursues a criminology major.

"I want to become a cop, with the end goal being an FBI agent. But we'll take it one step at a time," Powell said.

Division III Mount St. Joseph is coming off a 6-5 season in 2025, with a 5-1 record in the Heartlands conference and an Extra Points Bowl appearance. The team is coached by Tyler Hopperton, who enters his 10th season as head coach after he served as an assistant for five years.

It was the campus atmosphere that set the school apart for Powell, as he looks to take his talents from the gridiron of Cardinal Field to Schueler Field in Cincinnati.

"They reached out to me and when I went there the campus was great, the environment was great, and everyone there was kind and friendly," Powell said.
