Mercer County Sheriff's Office responded to a two-vehicle accident on Monday evening at the intersection of State Route 29 and Riley Road east of Celina.
CELINA - Ten people, including eight minors, were transported by five ambulances to two area hospitals following a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of State Route 29 and Riley Road on Monday night.
Three of the 10 involved in the accidents were suspected of having serious injuries, while the others reportedly incurred minor injuries, according to Mercer County Sheriff's Office Deputy Kristen Nixon.
The sheriff's office received a call at about 9 p.m. Monday about an accident at State Route 29 and Riley Road in Jefferson Township.
A 17-year-old male from Celina was reportedly driving a gold 2011 Dodge Journey southbound on Riley Road when he ran the stop sign at State Route 29 for an unknown reason, Nixon told The Daily Standard. Also in the Journey was a juvenile passenger.
The Dodge Journey struck a silver 2026 Honda Odyssey, driven by Ryan Vaubel, 42, Botkins, that was eastbound on State Route 29. Also in the vehicle were Ryan's wife, Emily Vaubel, 40, their five children aged 10-16, and a friend of one of their children, a 17-year-old female from Anna, according to Nixon.
"Crews on scene encountered two vehicles, one of which was on its side with two occupants with serious injuries entrapped in the vehicle," Celina Firefighters Local 2603 said in a social media post. "Occupants were quickly extricated from the vehicles and transported to a local hospital for treatment with serious injuries."
The 17-year-old driver and his juvenile passenger in the Dodge Journey, as well as Emily Vaubel, were believed to have serious injuries. They were taken to Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys, Nixon said.
The others involved in the accident reportedly had minor injuries and were transported to Mercer County Community Hospital, Coldwater, according to Nixon.
Their conditions were unknown as of Tuesday evening.
All of the occupants, Nixon said, were wearing seat belts except for three juveniles in the Odyssey.
The 17-year-old driver will likely be cited for failure to stop at a stop sign, Nixon said.
Alcohol and/or drugs are not suspected to be a factor in the accident.
The accident remains under investigation.
Mercer County Emergency Medical Services and the St. Marys Fire Department provided the ambulances.
