Grand Lake Fishing Report

Cooler weather makes for easy fishing

By Matt Tuttle

Good day everyone. I hope everyone is doing well.

Summer sure is trying to hold on. We will be looking for days like those in the middle of December.

There is cooler weather in the long term forecast, and that always excites me. This means the fish will be getting ready for the fall transition into winter which means they will be feeding heavily.

Going into the weekend you will notice both crappie and bluegill will become even more active and easier to catch because they move up shallow first. Which is convenient as the drought has hit us and the lake pretty hard.

So, shallow water isn't hard to find. I will be fishing shallow wood and shallow stake beds. I will be set at about a foot deep.

Also, I like to fish the back sides of boat lifts posts that are closest to the seawall. Still set at about 12 inches deep with a 5/8-inch cork with a 1/32 ounce jig head paired with a B&M Crappie triple tail plastic black and monkey milk color and purple and chartreuse. I don't typically tip any of my jigs with live bait.

This recent hot weather did require a minnow to get a quality bite fished in the same areas. When it cools down this week remember to start shallow and work deeper. I'm also using a 10-foot Outlaw Crappie pole. I can pitch with it and cast with it along with dipping in and around brush and stake beds.
