Celina girls win WBL bowling title

Celina's Corinne Westgerdes was tournament medalist and helped the Bulldogs win the WBL girls bowling tournament and outright league title on Friday at Plaza Lanes.

After finishing second to St. Marys in the regular season standings, the Celina girls bowling team needed a big performance on Friday at the league tournament to try and clinch a share of the overall league title.

The Bulldogs did that, and more, coming away with the tournament championship and, with St. Marys finishing fourth in the tournament, taking the outright title on their home venue at Plaza Lanes.

Entering, St. Marys had a 10-9 advantage in points after going 9-0 in league matches to Celina's 8-1 mark. Celina needed to win and have St. Marys finish second to split the overall title.

The Bulldogs started off strong in the round of three regulation games, finishing with a team total of 2,867, over 400 pins ahead of second-place Wapakoneta and over 500 pins ahead of St. Marys, which finished fourth in regulation games.

Celina started the round of six baker games with a 155, then went 175-223-198 over the next three to stay ahead of the field. The final two bakers came up 154-138 to finish with a tally of 1,043 and a grand total of 3,910, 460 pins ahead of runner-up Van Wert and 633 pins clear of St. Marys, which finished fourth in the tournament and give Celina enough of a points spread to claim the overall title.

Corinne Westgerdes came up with one of her best performances of the season, bowling games of 222-255-182 to finish with a 659 series to capture tournament medalist honors. Teammate Chloe Bruce finished second with a 589 series with Van Wert's Reagan Horine taking third with a 583 series.

Horine, who entered Friday in the WBL points lead based on performances during the season matches, did well enough to stay ahead of Bruce to win WBL Bowler of the Year honors. Bruce joined Horine on the first team along with Wapakoneta's Aubryn Schnarre, Defiance's Mabel Adams, Shawnee's Elena Meeker and St. Marys' Kaleigh Caywood.

Celina's Ryann Eckhardt and Brynly Huber were part of the second team All-WBL with Kenton's Karyn Hopkins, Wapak's Rylie Wernke and St. Marys' Ali Kable. Third team honors went to St. Marys' Braylee Mullins, Van Wert's Lindsey Say, Bath's Adelynn Howery, Defiance's Kalynn Michael and Wapak's Sophia Rupert-Hecht.

Westgerdes and St. Marys' Kallie McKinley were their teams' representatives on the honorable mention.
