Indiana man dies in semi-SUV accident

BLACKCREEK TOWNSHIP - A 44-year-old Indiana man was killed Saturday morning after he reportedly ran a stop sign and struck a semitractor-trailer at the intersection of state routes 49 and 707 in Blackcreek Township.

This was one of two separate fatal accidents that occurred in Mercer County on Saturday.

Mercer County Central Dispatch received a 911 call of a crash at 10:40 a.m. Saturday. Kenneth A. Edwards of Decatur, Indiana, was driving a 2016 black Chevy SUV eastbound on State Route 707, according to a news release from Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey.

Christopher D. Mckenzie, 61, of Jeaneretta, Louisiana, was driving a 2023 white Kenworth semitractor-trailer southbound on State Route 49.

Edwards ran the stop sign at the intersection, striking the semitractor-trailer on the passenger side, according to the release. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Mckenzie was not injured in the accident, Mercer County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Doug Timmerman told the newspaper.

The sheriff's office crash reconstruction team was called to the scene of the accident, which remains under investigation and will be forwarded to the county prosecutor's office for review, according to the release.

Also assisting at the scene were the Chattanooga Fire Department, Rockford Fire Department, Rockford Emergency Medical Services, Celina EMS and Mercer County Emergency Response Volunteers.
