Coldwater wins state Jr. ACME crown

Coldwater tacked on four runs in the top of the seventh to finish off an 8-0 victory over Ottawa-Glandorf and win the Junior ACME state championship at Archbold on Wednesday. It's the second state title for the Coldwater junior ACME, with the first in 1999, and the first trip to the final since taking runner-up in 2019.

The game was suspended Tuesday before the sixth inning with Coldwater up 4-0.

Briggs Howell hit a two-run single in the seventh, then stole second, and Evan Winner hit a ground ball to shortstop that was misplayed, bringing home Howell and Tanner Wendel.

Derek Dues continued his excellence on the mound, allowing one hit and two walks over the final two innings but finishing the shutout and earning Most Valuable Player of the tournament. He struck out four batters on Wednesday after punching out six in the first five innings on Tuesday and stranded a total of 11 runners, nine in scoring position.

Howell finished 3-for-3 with two RBI, and Dues and Karsyn Homan had two hits apiece.

MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

Celina native Seth Lonsway rebounded from a shaky second start with the Double-A Richmond Flying Squirrels, pitching 6 1/3 scoreless innings and scattering five hits and a walk for his first win since being promoted.

Lonsway only struck out two batters and departed with Kevin Made at second base after a throwing error, and reliever Kyle Cody got the final two outs to strand Made at third. That was only the second runner he allowed to reach second, and he induced three double plays while stranding four.

The Flying Squirrels gave him some support with two runs in the bottom of the second, including Will Wilson's RBI double, and Victor Bericoto made it 3-0 with an RBI double in the fifth. Two more runs came across in the sixth, and Lonsway left with a 5-0 lead.

Through three starts, Lonsway's ERA is 2.60, and Wednesday's outing marks the second time he's gotten through six scoreless innings.
