Joseph Barhorst
Joseph A. Barhorst, age 91 of Philothea, died on Monday, May 27, 2024 at the Gardens at St. Henry.
He was born January 19, 1933 in Ft. Loramie to the late August & Mary (Herbert) Barhorst . He faithfully cared for his loving wife of 66 years, Wilma (Fiely) Barhorst before she preceded him in 2020.
He is survived by children, Diane Stromblad of Coldwater; Joyce & Steve Koesters of St. Henry; Dale & Bonnie Barhorst of Coldwater; Donna & Rick Hemmelgarn of Philothea; and Lynn & Jake Bruggeman of St. Henry; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 6 step-great-grandchildren; his youngest sister, Martha & Richard Subler of New Bremen, and in-laws, Ruth & Orville Kunk of Philothea, Alice Grieshop of Maria Stein and Lavern & Jane Fiely of Coldwater.
He is preceded in death by a daughter-in-law Kathy Barhorst and siblings and in-laws, Clarrissa Brinkman, Charlene & Lavern Schmit, Doris & Virgil Bruggeman, Dolores & Werner Bruggeman, Herb & Chris Barhorst, Clarence & Shirley Barhorst, Marilyn & Ralph Meyer, Emily & Jack Subler, Margie & Edward Rethman, Eloise & Ivo Braun, and Margie & Cyril Gehret.
Joe was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Philothea. He was retired from New Idea after 46 1/2 years and a longtime member of the Steelworker's Union. Joe also worked at the Coldwater Post Office and delivered the Dayton Daily News for many years. He was a longtime rosary leader, lector and Eucharistic minister. He was a golden member of the Coldwater Eagles for 55 years and the Coldwater Knights of Columbus. He was a loving father, grandfather and especially great-grandfather.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2024 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Philothea. Fr. Larry Hemmelgarn, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Marys Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday and 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the Hogenkamp Funeral Home, Coldwater.
