Big inning for Redskins
Eight-run fourth inning lifts St. Henry to tournament victory

ST. HENRY - Star Wars Day (May 4) might have been this past Saturday, but on May 6, the fourth was strong for St. Henry.
The Redskins plated eight runs in the inning to break a scoreless tie and won their Division IV softball tournament opener over Waynesfield Goshen 10-0 in six innings at the Wally Post Athletic Complex on Monday.
The win sends St. Henry (7-13) into the sectional final on Thursday at Ada. The Tigers drop to 7-7.
The fourth inning was the breakthrough inning at the plate, as the Redskins had just six hits with four coming in the fourth. Waynesfield pitchers Tarynn Vorhes and Tatelynn Faraglia combining to strike out 11 batters.St. Henry left three runners stranded over the first three innings.
"Whenever we needed the hit, we came through," said St. Henry coach Ashley Knapke. "Defensively, yeah, we were shaky at times. But when we needed to come through, we came through."
Jalynn Everman started the fourth by reaching on an error. Leah Lefeld followed with a single and Paige Felver reached on an error to load the bases for Olivia Gast, who cleared the bases with a double to right.
Renee Wendel was then hit by a pitch before Tiger pitcher Tarynn Vorhes got a strikeout for the first out of the inning. Lauren Thieman came up and belted a triple to right to score two more runs, then Rya Buschur brought home Thieman to make it 6-0.

After Kennedy Wendel was hit by a pitch, the Tigers made a pitching change as Tatelyn Faraglia came on to try and get the final two outs. Buschur came home on a wild pitch, with Everman drawing a walk in her second trip to the plate in the inning. A double-steal allowed Kennedy Wendel to score for the eighth run of the inning.
St. Henry had a chance to reach double figures with the bases loaded, but Faraglia got a strikeout of Lefeld to end the threat.
The Redskins continued to find ways to keep the Tigers from scoring. St. Henry had seven errors on the day, but two big double plays along with solid pitching from Everman, who did not walk a batter and pitched a four-hitter, prevented the Tigers from denting the scoreboard.
"Jalynn did a great job of keeping them to ground balls (only three fly-outs to the outfield)," said Knapke. "Defense came through when we needed to."
Faraglia retired the St. Henry side in the fifth, but in the sixth the run-rule was finally triggered. Kennedy Wendel was hit by a pitch for the second straight plate appearance and Everman followed with a triple to score her catcher to make it 9-0. Lefeld walked to put runners on the corners for Felver, but a wild pitch allowed Everman to trot home to end the game.
"It's been up and down this season, but hopefully we'll keep going," said Knapke.
