WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP - Two candidates are vying for the township fiscal officer position as current officer Ellen Homan retires at the end of her term.
Samantha Menchhofer and Ryan Sutter are competing for the position.
Menchhofer, 35, has a bachelor's degree in early childhood education from Ball State University. She currently helps run the family farm with her husband, Eric, and is a stay-at-home mother for her two children.
She has never held public office.
Menchhofer said she helps keep the books for the farm.
"I'm running to help out the township and help keep everything flowing on in a good way," she said.
If elected, Menchhofer said she'd stay the course and make sure "everything (is) going the way it should be."
Sutter, 35, is a Fort Recovery High School graduate with a certificate in performance engines from Sinclair Community College. He is the general manager at Sutter Bros. in Coldwater. He and his wife have five children, with a sixth expected by the end of the month.
He has never held public office.
Sutter cited his experience keeping books at the family business, which he said includes managing finances, budgeting, working with banks, reviewing operation agreements and contract negotiations.
He's running due to Homan's retirement, saying he wanted to take the opportunity to serve in the position.
"I enjoy that type of work," he said.
If elected, Sutter said he would like to increase transparency for township residents. While public notices are published in The Daily Standard, Sutter said he'd like to find other ways to reach constituents.
