School levy on Parkway Nov. ballot

Parkway levy

By Leslie Klosterman
ROCKFORD - Parkway Local Schools District voters will choose whether to renew a five-year, 1.5 mill permanent improvement tax levy on the Nov. 7 ballot.
Should voters decide to renew it, the levy would continue to collect $236,000 annually. The owner of a $100,000 home would continue to pay $53 per year, according to information provided by district treasurer Debbie Pierce.
Pierce said the permanent improvement levy "goes directly to the benefit of our students." She said expenditures in the last two years included track repairs for $36,515 in July 2021, upgraded air handler controllers for $29,095 in February 2023, concrete pads at the track for $8,250 in May 2023, an outdoor camera security system for $160,605 in July 2023, and two buses in July 2021 and August 2023 for $210,961.
Taxpayers first passed a five-year 1.6 mill permanent improvement levy in 1970 before increasing it to 1.9 mills for one year in 1982. The 1.9 mill levy was approved for three years in 1983 and approved for two years in 1986. It was then renewed in 1988 and 1991.
The levy was replaced with a three-year 1.9 mill levy in 1994 before it was reduced to 1.5 mills in 1999. The five-year 1.5 mill levy was renewed in 2004, 2009, 2014 and most recently in 2019.
