Eugene Berning
Eugene Bernard Berning, age 93, of Anna, passed away peacefully of natural causes early Wednesday morning, December 14, 2022, at Fair Haven Shelby County Home in Sidney, Ohio.
He was born February 2, 1929, in Sidney, Ohio, to the late Fred & Frances (Wuebker) Berning. On June 11, 1955, at St. Remy Catholic Church in Russia, Gene married Irene (Monnin) Berning who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Susan & Vincent Pedulla of New Bern, NC, Kathleen & Mark Barhorst of Fort Loramie and Marla & Luis Concha of Tipp City; seven of eight grandchildren: Christopher & Amanda, Ryan and Jason & Elizabeth Barhorst, Vincent (dec.), Joseph and Michael Pedulla, Analisa & Andre Franca and Antonio Concha; seven great-grandchildren: Riley, Kale, Harper, Jett, Nolan, Ella and Ethan Barhorst; one sister, Marie Theis of Sidney and two sisters-in-law: Velma Berning of Sidney and Marietta Monnin of McCartyville along with numerous nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by four siblings, Andrew Berning, Norma & Nick Bergman, Sylvester Berning, and Fred & Betty Berning as well as brothers & sisters-in-law: James Theis, Merle, Audry, Romanus & Margie and infant Mary Monnin.
Mr. Berning served as Corporal in the US Army during the Korean War. He then served in the Army Reserves for four years. Gene retired from Roettger Hardwood Inc. of Kettlersville, where he had been a custom cabinet maker. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and the former St. Patrick Church where he served as St. Patrick's cemetery custodian for 25 years. He had also been a life member of the Fort Loramie American Legion Post 355. Gene was an outdoor enthusiast. He especially enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 AM, Monday, December 19, 2022, at St. Michael Church in Fort Loramie with Rev. Stephen Mondiek presiding. Interment will follow at St. Michael's Cemetery.
Friends may call Sunday 3:00 to 6:00 PM and Monday 9:00 to 10:00 AM at Gehret Funeral Home in Fort Loramie.
Memorials may be made to Glenmary Home Missioners or charities of choice.
