Big game earns Lonsway honors

After some struggles early in the season, Seth Lonsway finally broke through in a major way.

The Ohio State redshirt junior and Celina graduate pitched a gem on Saturday in a 6-0 win over Indiana at Bill Davis Stadium in Columbus.

Lonsway needed just 95 pitches - 64 going for strikes - to pitch a two-hitter with two walks and a college-career-best 17 strikeouts. The school record for punchouts in a game is 20, held jointly by Scott Lewis, who did the feat in a nine-inning game in 2003 against Iowa, and Steve Arlin, who fanned his 20 in a 15-inning contest in 1965 against Washington State in the College World Series.

Lonsway's effort earned him the Big Ten's Pitcher of the Week honor for this week. Teammate Zach Dezenzo was named the conference's Player of the Week after going 8-for-15 with two home runs in the series against the Hoosiers.

The win is part of a four-game winning streak for the Buckeyes, who improve to 12-7 playing only Big Ten contests.

The effort was Lonsway's first win of the season, putting him at 1-3 and lower his ERA to 3.90. In 27 ⅔ innings, Lonsway has 44 strikeouts and opponents are batting a conference-low .137.

The Buckeyes return to action starting today with a three-game series against Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Fleagle an All-American

Ohio State posted one of its best showings at the NCAA National Championship Meet, finishing seventh overall, the first time since 1962 and 1963 that the Buckeyes finished in the top 10 in consecutive seasons.

Buckeye freshman and St. Marys native Justin Fleagle, who swam for a season at Celina and is a longtime member of the Auglaize-Mercer County Family Y (AMFY) Waves team, earned two All-American honors. The best coming in the 200-yard medley relay when he, Hunter Armstrong, Hudson McDaniel and Sem Andreis finished fourth in a time of 1:22.49 to earn first team All-America honors. Then to wrap up the tournament, the 400 freestyle relay - with Paul Delakis replacing McDaniel in the lineup - finished 12th to earn honorable mention All-America honors.
