Fire damages Mendon home
Fire was out, then reignites

A fire destroyed the residence at 109 S. Main St., Mendon, on Sunday morning. The blaze caused $35,000 to $40,000 in damage, officials said.
MENDON - A Sunday fire at a Mendon home caused an estimated $35,000 to $40,000 worth of damage, but no one was injured, according to Mendon Fire Chief Darrell Etgen.
Firefighters responded to 109 S. Main St. after receiving a call from the owners at 10:50 a.m. reporting smoke coming from the attic.
When trucks began to arrive, Etgen said heavy smoke was observed coming from the second story of the home.
With mutual aid sent from Rockford and Spencerville, about 30 firefighters were on the scene for several hours, according to Etgen. After the fire was deemed to be under control, the family had reportedly gone into the structure to remove some items when they called to report the fire had reignited.
Etgen said some of the home's insulation had been smoldering, which firefighters returned to remove.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation as of Monday evening, but Etgen estimated the home had sustained between $35,000 and $40,000 worth of damage. The house was insured.
The American Red Cross was contacted to offer aid if needed, but Etgen said the family planned to stay with other family members.
