He is survived by his siblings and their spouses Mary (Louis) Grieshop, Paul Broering, Elmer (Barb) Broering, Luke (Barb) Broering, Jean (Orville) Borgert, Robert (Betty) Broering, Walter (Shirley) Broering, brother-in-law Dennis (Sharon) Ontrop and in-laws Frank (Donna) Woeste, Karen (Jim) Scheer, Brad (Nancy) Hegemier.
Preceding him in death were sisters Esther (Broering) Ontrop and Irene (Broering) Speelman, brothers-in-law Vernon Gehret and George Speelman, sister-in-law Nancy (Paul) Broering and sister-in-law Joan (Woeste) Hegemier, and two infant grandchildren Charlie Broering & Riley Broering.
Don grew up on a dairy farm in Cranberry Prairie. He graduated from St. Henry High School in 1961, and later received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees from The Ohio State University. He was a vocational agricultural teacher and FFA Advisor at St. Henry High School from 1964 thru 1994. His students constructed over 100 custom-built livestock trailers still in use today throughout the local area. He was a livestock and crop farmer who was, of course, "outstanding in his field."
After retiring from 30-years of teaching, he became a woodworker, crafting many creations from primarily hard woods including his world-famous hall trees, cutting boards, industrial-strength napkin holders, step stools, bowls, and clothes drying racks. If it could be constructed out of wood, he gave it a shot. And the wood product was certainly designed to withstand either a seasonal hurricane or passing tornado.
Don was an avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Cincinnati Reds, and the Cincinnati Bengals. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play various school sports. He also enjoyed gardening and loved all things related to farming.
Due to COVID-19 concerns, there will be no public viewing. A private family mass at St. Mary of Philothea Church will be held on Saturday, November 21st at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Marys of Philothea cemetery.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date. (Condolences may be left at www.hogenkampfh.com ) In his honor, do a kind deed for someone; that would make him happy.
