ATV crash victim is identified

Sawyer Overman, 6, dies; brother is hurt

RECOVERY TOWNSHIP - Sawyer Overman, the 6-year-old Fort Recovery boy who died in an all-terrain vehicle accident, reportedly was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.

A 911 call was made at 7:38 p.m. Monday to report an ATV crash had occurred in a field, according to a Mercer County Sheriff's Office news release. The incident took place west of State Route 49, south of Park Road.

An investigation found that Sawyer had been operating a 2011 Polaris Ranger down a gravel drive between two fields. His 8-year-old brother reportedly was with him in the vehicle.

The ATV reportedly traveled off the right side of the road. Sawyer overcorrected and lost control, causing the vehicle to travel off the left side of the lane, the release stated. The ATV reportedly overturned and ejected Sawyer, who was then pinned underneath the vehicle. His brother reportedly was able to free himself from inside the ATV and went for help.

Several adults responded and attempted resuscitation until St. Henry EMS officials arrived, according to the release. Sawyer was transported to Mercer County Community Hospital in Coldwater, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. His 8-year-old brother suffered minor injuries and was treated at the hospital as well.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by members of the St. Henry EMS and Fort Recovery Fire Department.
