Minster to seek first EMS levy

By Ed Gebert
MINSTER - Village council members on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution to place a 3-mill, three-year fire/EMS levy on the Nov. 6 election ballot.
Members after some discussion agreed to use the ballot language recommended by the legal firm hired to draw up the legislation. Village solicitor James Hearn also recommended the language.
If passed, the levy would generate about $290,000 annually. It would take effect Jan. 1 but the funds would not be collected until 2020.
The annual cost to the owner of a $100,000 property would be $105 per year. The funds would help cover the costs of EMS services and fire department needs, village administrator Don Harrod said.
Council member Nicole Clune had said at a previous meeting that village officials have delayed requesting more money for as long as they could, but the time has come to consider it, noting most area communities already have fire and EMS levies.
Members also met in executive session for about five minutes to discuss the possible purchase of land. No action was taken afterward.
