Mendon council approves placing renewal on ballot

MENDON - Voters likely will see a 2.5-mill operating levy renewal issue on the November ballot.
Village council members at Tuesday's regular meeting approved final reading of a resolution to place the five-year renewal levy issue on the November ballot. Originally approved in 2013, the levy collects about $15,071 annually. The owner of a $100,000 home would continue to pay $87.50 per year, county auditor Randy Grapner had said.
Levy dollars go into the general fund to pay for the village's day-to-day operations, fiscal officer Kristina Boroff previously said.
Also on the agenda, council members learned from street commissioner Randy Severn's report that Federal Field Services LLC of Wauseon recently replaced the battery in the tornado siren located next to the village hall.
The siren did not work during a recent test. Councilors on Tuesday night approved a contract to pay the company $450 to inspect the siren. The contract can be renewed annually if approved by both parties.
In other action, council members learned a resident had planted trees without permission in a village right-of-way between 305 E. Market St. and 202 N. Green St. After some discussion, members agreed to have solicitor Ross Finke send a letter ordering the unnamed resident to remove the trees as soon possible.
Mayor John Boroff also told council members he wants to review the village's zoning code to simplify it, admitting he has trouble understanding some rules. He asked Finke to see how much it would cost for an outside source to simplify the code.
Councilors rescheduled the next council meeting for 7 p.m. June 12 at the village hall.
