Sister Dorothy Schmitmeyer
Resurrection liturgy for Precious Blood Sister Dorothy Schmitmeyer will be held at the Salem Heights Chapel, 4960 Salem Ave., Dayton, Ohio on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 10:30 a.m.
Visitation will be at the Chapel Saturday from 9-10:30 a.m. immediately preceding the liturgy.
Sister died at the Maria Joseph Center in Dayton on Thursday, April 14, 2016. Dorothy was 82 and had been a Sister of the Precious Blood for 64 years.
One of five children, Dorothy was born in Minster, Ohio on March 17, 1934 to Leander B. and Elizabeth (Enneking) Schmitmeyer. On August 30, 1951 at the age of 17, she formally entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Precious Blood.
In religious life she was given the name of Sister Mary Donald and later returned to using her baptismal name. Religious life for Dorothy was, "touching the Christ of today and bringing others to share more deeply in the oneness of Him."
Beginning in 1954 she ministered for 12 years as a teacher and later as principal in elementary schools in Ohio and California. In 1966 Dorothy began ministering as a missionary in Chile, South America where for 14 years she taught, was a pastoral director and Vicariate Director.
In 1980 her Congregation called her to serve her Sisters in administration as Vice President. Eight years later she returned again to minister in Chile. For 26 years she served the Chileans by teaching, pastoral work, retreat work and youth ministry.
Dorothy was very grateful to minister in Chile where "Precious Blood became more than the name of our Congregation but a lived spirituality by touching the suffering Christ" in the lives of so many Chileans.
In 2014 Sister retired to Salem Heights and in 2015 resided in the Maria Joseph Center.
Sister Dorothy is survived by her Precious Blood Community of Sisters, her brothers, Donald (Marilyn) Schmitmeyer, and Jerry Schmitmeyer. Survivors also include her sister, Martha (Cy) Thobe, sister-in-law, Mary Ann Schmitmeyer as well as nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death was her brother, Roger Schmitmeyer.
Interment will be in the Salem Heights Cemetery.
