Rockford volunteers prep for free dinner

ROCKFORD - Over the last decade, Rockford's annual "Together at Christmas" free meal has grown from a way to feed the less-fortunate during the holidays into a full-blown community event.
The meal began in 2005 "with a vision by the Rockford United Methodist Church's administrative board to provide dinner for those who are alone or hungry on Christmas," church officer manager Susan Sheppard said. [More]

MINSTER - It was a tale of two halves for St. Marys and Minster on Tuesday night.
After struggling in the first half, the Roughriders chipped away at the Wildcats' lead throughout the second half before taking the lead midway through the fourth quarter. Minster (6-1) tied the game late before Quincy Rable hit a buzzer-beating bunny shot to give the Roughriders a 49-47 win and hand Minster its first loss of the season. [More]

MINSTER - The Hanover Street School will change hands today.
Minster Local Schools Superintendent Brenda Boeke told school board members Tuesday that officials will close on the sale at 4 p.m. today with Current Medical Services, of Sylva, N.C., and Midnet Media, of Minster.
CELINA - The sheriff's department on Tuesday was granted approval to buy new clothing for inmates and equipment for the jail.
Mercer County Commissioners approved the requests made in writing by Sheriff Jeff Grey.
CELINA - The Mercer County Board of Elections on Tuesday approved the petitions for all candidates but rejected those submitted for a liquor option.
Board members gathered for their regular meeting at which they reviewed the petitions for candidates and issues for the March 15 primary election.
