Mary Kohnen
Mary Evelyn Kohnen, age 93, of Celina, passed away Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
Born on Feb. 21, 1922 in Mercer County, she was a Daughter of the late Bernard N. "Ben" & Clara M. Wendel Meier. Mary Evelyn and Norbert J. Kohnen were married on May 30, 1942, and had celebrated 73 years of marriage this year.
Norbert survives, along with their 5 Children: Karen (Kirk) Habegger of Decatur, Indiana, Marilyn Reser of Lima, and Patricia (Tom) McDermitt, Ronald Kohnen (fiancee Karen Rasawehr Shafer), and Timothy Kohnen (fiancee Tracy Lautzenheiser), all of Celina, 17 Grandchildren: Kathie Kruse, Kristan Nussbaum, Kevin Habegger, Shane, Sean & Amy Reser, Jeremy & Jordan Mihm, Jaime Bergman, Seth, Corey, Jonathan & Wesley Kohnen, Lindsey Fullenkamp, Taylor & Ryan Lautzenheiser, and Beth Link, and 26 Great Grandchildren. Also surviving are 4 Brothers & Sisters: Ernest (Pat) Meier of Seattle, Washington, Roseann Puthoff of Minster, and Charles (Mary Catherine) Meier and Janet (Ronnie) Stachler, both of Celina.
She was preceded in death by a Sister: Lucille Loughridge, a Sister-in-law: Ruth Mary Meier, and Brothers-in-law: Lowell Loughridge, Don Nelson and Leander Puthoff.
Mary & Norbert were extremely proud of their 4 Grandsons who served in the military. Sean Reser, who retired after serving 20 years in the U.S. Air Force; Jordan Mihm served 8 years in the Air Force; Corey Kohnen, with 18 years of service in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps; and Jonathan Kohnen, who served 14 years of active duty with the U.S. Army and 2 years in the Army Reserves.
A homemaker, Mary Evelyn also helped manage the family poultry farm. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Celina.
Mary was an "awesome" baker, with her specialties being bread and coffee cakes. She enjoyed sewing clothing for her children, making doll clothes and quilt squares, and did beautiful embroidery work. Other favorite pastimes were reading and gardening.
She had helped care for her Grandchildren over the years, and enjoyed spending time with them, and all her family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, Dec. 2, at Immaculate Conception Church, Celina, with Father Ken Schnipke, C.PP.S., presiding. Burial will follow at St. Marys Catholic Cemetery, Celina.
Calling Hours are from 2:00-6:00 P.M., Tuesday, Dec. 1, and 9:15-10:15 A.M. on Wednesday, at W.H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home, Celina.
Memorial Contributions may be made to The Ohio State University James Cancer Center or Community Health Professionals Hospice.
