Harvest begins

A farmer harvests soybeans on Thursday at the intersection of U.S. 127 and state Route 274. A very small number of farmers have started taking off soybeans and corn for grain in the county, said Chris Gibbs, executive director of the Mercer County Farm Service Agency. Yields reported so far are "all over the board," said Gibbs, with soybeans ranging 20-60 bu. per acre and corn 6/10 of a bu. per acre to 230 bu. per acre. Record June rains destroyed crops in some areas, with the southern part of the county faring better than the northern part, which received more rain, he said.
