Raymond Schmidt
Raymond J. Schmidt, 97, Saint Marys, died Friday, September 11, 2015, at his residence.
He was born June 9, 1918, in Saint Marys, the son of Ernst and Johanettie "Nettie" (Schultz) Schmidt. He married Marjory Westerbeck on October 18, 1941, in New Bremen, Ohio, and she preceded him in death on May 6, 2010.
He is survived by his children: Dorothy Coore of Cincinnati; Janet (Patrick) Smith of Celina; Don (Rita) Schmidt of Findlay, Sara (Don) Maurer of New Knoxville; Dale (Harold Poppe) Schmidt of Saint Marys; Lynn (Carol) Schmidt of Saint Marys. He is survived by his grandchildren Kerry Smith; Jennifer Smith; Ellen (Jim) Fedison; Tara (Tim) Brzuski; Mark (Ann) Schmidt; Chris (Maggie) Schmidt; Faith (Travis) Gingerich; Rich (Trish) Maurer; Scott (Bobbi) Maurer; Wendy (Daren) Scott; Amy (Kevin) Turner. He is survived by 22 great-grandchildren. He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Lois Lammers Stammen and Betty Westerbeck.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a son-in-law, Frank Coore; two brothers-in-law, John (Helen) Westerbeck and Ken Westerbeck; by a half-brother, Edgar (Lucille) Schmidt.
Ray was a 1936 graduate of Saint Marys Memorial High School. He attended Ohio State University. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Army 54th Signal Repair Unit on Okinawa during WWII.
Ray was the 20th employee hired at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Saint Marys, and he retired after 35.5 years of service to the company. He was also employed as a real estate agent for 20 years with Kuck Realty in Saint Marys, and, along with his wife, was an auction clerk for many years.
He served as a St. Marys City Schools bus driver and bus coordinator for many years. He was a lifelong member of St Paul's United Church of Christ in Saint Marys, where he served as an elder, deacon, president of the Consistory and the congregation, and he taught Sunday School for many years.
He was a Little League coach, member of the original Rider Rooters committee and recipient of their Blue Blazer Award, former member of Saint Marys Rotary Club, Eagles Aerie 767, and the Goodfellows. He was an avid bowler and card player.
Funeral rites will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, September 18, 2015, at Saint Paul's United Church of Christ in Saint Marys, the Reverend Ed Bray, officiant.
Friends may call from 4-8 P.M. Thursday at the Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road, Saint Marys, where memorial gifts may be given to the Saint Paul's United Church of Christ Mission Endowment Fund. Friends may also call one hour prior to the funeral rites on Friday at the church.
