Mariners had historical season

This summer's Grand Lake Mariners would've probably liked their win-loss record to have been a little better. That doesn't mean that they won't show up in the Mariner record books.

This season was a tale of high and low points for the Mariners - probably none better than a historical game last Sunday that saw the team achieve club-records in homers and runs in a 23-6 win over Lorain County at Montgomery Field.

Grand Lake's season ended last night with a 14-2 loss to the Xenia Scouts at Grady's Field in the opening round of the GLSCL playoffs.

The Mariners' struggles at the end of the season were well documented. They lost seven of their final 10 games. However, they were competitive throughout the season and lost many one-run games. Even so, the team's offensive production ranked among the best in Mariner history and they solidified their place in the record books in several categories.
On the offensive

With 376 team hits, the Mariners set a new single-season record. The previous mark was held by the 2001 team with 369. The team batting average of .274 is one of the five best in Mariner history. The 220 runs scored during the regular season rank second all-time. The 1997 team holds the record with 222 runs. Additionally, the 21 home runs by this year's team were three shy of the Mariner record of 24 set in 1998.
Roscetti in good company

Shortstop Nick Roscetti ended the regular season with the fourth best batting average in team history of .369. The Sherman, Ill., native who plays collegiately at the University of Iowa also led the team in RBIs (24) and runs scored (27), and struck out just 12 times in 122 at-bats.
Big bat Bollinger

Dalton Bollinger (University of Toledo) delivered the game-winning home run in a 6-3 victory over the Ironmen at Veterans Field last Saturday night. He led off Sunday's home run derby with a three-run shot. During a 2-1 stretch last week (two games with the Ironmen, one against the Cincinnati Steam), Bollinger went 8-for-15 with seven RBIs, two homers, and scored six runs. Bollinger finished second on the team in the regular season with a batting average of .324.
Like a Boss

Brad Boss hit two of his team-high four home runs in Sunday's record-setting win against Lorain County. Boss, also a Toledo Rocket, finished the regular season strong, with two or more hits in seven of his final 10 games.
Armed with locals

St. Henry graduate Jeff Paul earned a GLSCL All-Star selection in his first season with the team, after throwing 15 scoreless innings to begin the season. Paul (Ohio Dominican) allowed six earned runs on 13 hits in 21 2/3 innings, and had a record of 2-1 with a team-high two saves.

Celina graduate Riley Luebke (Wright State-Lake Campus) arrived late in the season but was effective during his five innings of work. Luebke allowed five earned runs on 10 hits and earned a save in a 12-11 win over the Licking County Settlers on July 19.

Another semi-local pitcher - Damien Helm (Crestview High School) - earned an All-Star nod in his first season with the Mariners. The lengthy lefty allowed 11 earned runs in 35 innings. He had a record of 1-0 and ranked second among pitchers in strikeouts with 26.

The board approved a change order not to exceed $65,000 for the lights. This is in addition to the $768,889 base contract held by H.A. Dorsten Inc. of Minster.
