Richard Hartings
Richard Bernard Hartings, January 20, 1926-April 30, 2015, passed away at age 89 at the Houston Hospice.
He was the ninth and last remaining of ten children born to Joseph Henry and Christina Mary Rose Hartings in Columbus, Ohio.
Richard is survived by sister-in-law Violet Maseda Hartings of St. Pete Beach, FL, over one hundred and twenty nieces and nephews spanning three generations and many beloved and dear old friends remembering Richard for his love of family, faith and his sweet gentle humor.
He was one of 69 grandchildren on his paternal grandparents side preceded in death by his sisters Agnes, Dorothy and Rosemary O.S.F. Hartings. Eleanor (Don) Reed, Rita (Mark Grogan) (Harold Klein), Joan (Jeremy) Grady, brothers Norbert, Edward (Geneva), Raymond (Joanie) Hartings and nephews Thomas, Robert and Daniel Reed and niece Christina Klein Henderson.
Graduating from of Our Lady of Victory HS class of 1944 he excelled in basketball winning a game for his team with a last minute slam dunk and carried off the court by his teammates in victory.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy the same year becoming a Seaman First Class and served on the USS Haven and USS Westmoreland earning a Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal and Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal.
Richard returned to Ohio after service entering Ohio State University specializing in Business Administration graduating in 1950.
When living in Houston Richard was in sales and later worked for Attorneys Joe Rojo and Brian Storts, was a huge sports fan always supporting Ohio State University.
Heartfelt thanks to the staff and caregivers at the VA Hospital, St. Dominic Village Nursing home and Houston Hospice never to be forgotten.
On Saturday May 23 there will be a 1:00 pm service officiated by Msgr. Fred O'Connor and honor guard at Houston National Cemetery (10410 Veteran's Memorial Drive, Houston 77038) followed by a 2:30 pm wake at Richard's favorite place Kay's Lounge (2324 Bissonnet, Houston 77005).
On Sunday, May 24th at 10:00 am a Memorial Mass will be held in Warren Chapel at St. Dominic Village (2409 Holcombe Blvd Houston 77021).
In lieu of flowers please donate to the charity of your choice or Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.
Arrangements were handled by Aldine Funeral Chapel, Houston, Texas.
