Sr. Evelyn Monnin
Sister Evelyn Monnin, 88, Dayton, and formerly of Russia, died Aug. 6, 2014, at the Maria Joseph Center, Dayton.
The oldest of six children, she was born Jan. 24, 1926, in Russia, to Clarence H. and Anna Dapore Monnin. On Aug. 13, 1942, at the age of 16, she formally entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Precious Blood.
Surviving are two sisters, Kathleen Heuing, Russia, and Norma (Ronald) Bensman, Minster; a brother, Linus (Rita) Monnin, Russia; a sister-in-law, Doris Monnin, Versailles; a brother-in-law, William Mann, Naples, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Deceased are a sister, Elizabeth Mann; a brother, Carl Monnin; and a brother-in-law, Bud Heuing.
She was a sister of the Precious Blood for 72 years. In religious life she was known for some time as Sister M. Georgina before she returned to using her baptismal name.
She was a compassionate, loving and soft-spoken person who was always willing to help or go on an adventure if, as she put it, "life needed a spark." She was an inspiration to and loved by her family and will be greatly missed.
She graduated from the University of Dayton and Xavier University and was a teacher for 47 years, teaching grades one to eight in St. Joseph, Mo., Arvada, Colo., and in Dayton, Vandalia, Coldwater, Celina and Russia. Nine of those years she served as principal.
From 1990-1993, she was a gentle, loving caregiver to her mother in Russia. For eight years afterward, she served as assistant coordinator at Emma Hall, Dayton, serving the congregation's infirmed sisters. She retired in 2001 at Salem Heights, Dayton, and continued at Emma Hall as a volunteer until 2013, logging 5,000 hours of volunteer time. Because of failing health, she moved in 2014 to the Maria Joseph Center.
A resurrection liturgy is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Salem Height's Chapel, 4960 Salem Ave., Dayton, the Rev. Robert Monnin, officiating. Burial will follow at Salem Heights Cemetery, Dayton.
Calling is 6-8 p.m. today and 9-10 a.m. Saturday at the chapel.
Baker-Hazel and Snider Funeral Home and Crematory, Dayton, is handling arrangements.
