Barrett Kemp

Barrett G. Kemp, 82, of rural Wapakoneta, died at noon, April 24, 2014, at Hospice of Dayton.

He was born Feb. 22, 1932, in Dayton, to Barrett M. and Gladys Linkhart Kemp. After the death of his first wife, Patricia Picard, he married Shirley Glass McEvoy. She, too, is deceased.

Surviving are two children, Becky (Ed) Harruff of New Bremen and Barrett G. "Buz" Kemp II of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; a sister, Janet Wills of Dayton; a brother, Merle "Skip" Kemp of Danville, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Jayne Fahncke of Miamisburg, and Lori Morris of St. Marys; two grandchildren, Lydia Ray and Bart Kemp; and three great-grandchildren.

A sister, Shirley Mancz, is deceased.

He had practiced law in St. Marys since 1961 and was former law director of St. Marys. He was a member of the St. Marys Community Improvement Corp. and a founding member of St. Marys Sister Cities Inc. He was a member and past president of the St. Marys Rotary Club and St. Marys Outing Club (Idlewild). He also was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in St. Marys, where he had served as treasurer of the Endowment Fund, a trustee, deacon and an adult Sunday school teacher.

A 1950 graduate of Oakwood High School, he graduated from Ohio University in 1954 and from the Ohio Northern University College of Law in 1959. He was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1959. A U.S. Army veteran, he served as a military intelligence agent with the 5th Army Headquarters from 1954-1959 and as an FBI agent from 1959 to 1961.

Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Marys church, the Rev. Dr. Ed Bray officiating. American Legion Post 323 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9289 will conduct military rites. Private burial rites will be at a later date.

Calling is from 9:30 a.m. Tuesday until the time of services at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation.

Miller Funeral Home, St. Marys, has charge of arrangements.
