Clarence Barhorst
Clarence U. Barhorst, 79, Botkins, died at 4:33 p.m. Feb. 14, 2014, at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Sidney.
He was born April 15, 1934, in Minster to August and Mary Herbert Barhorst, who both preceded him in death. On Nov. 19, 1955, he married Shirley A. Nuss, who died Nov. 27, 1998.
Surviving are five children, Darlene (Terry) Lampert, Botkins, Karen (Rick) Ramey, Wapakoneta, Susan (Lee) Scott, Wapakoneta, Randy (Laurie) Barhorst, Wapakoneta, and Brian Barhorst, New Bremen; seven grandchildren, Heather (Isaiah) Johnson, Brent Ramey, Austin Scott, Adam Scott, Sherri (Justin) Rogers, Jodi (Dustin) Hurley and Conner Barhorst; eight great-grandchildren, Haylee Johnson, Kaiden, Keegen, and Kayleigh Rogers, and Blaine, Ian, Gavin, and Korbin Hurley; siblings, Clarrisa Brinkman, Kansas City, Mo., Doris Bruggeman, Maria Stein, Delores Bruggeman, Maria Stein, Marilyn (Ralph) Meyer, Coldwater, Emily Subler, Frenchtown, Martha (Richard) Subler, New Bremen, and Joseph (Wilma) Barhorst, Philothea; brothers-in-law, Lavern Schmidt, Celina, Ivo Braun, Portland, Ind., and Thomas (Sharon) Nuss, Sidney; sisters-in-law, Clarissa Barhorst, Russia, and Carol (Wilfred) Prenger, Minster; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Deceased are three sisters, Charlene Schmidt, Eloise Braun and Marjorie Rethman; a brother, Herbert Barhorst, and four brothers-in-law, Virgil Bruggeman, Werner Bruggeman, Jack Subler and Ed Rethman.
He retired in 1978 as a service repairman with Harry's Paint Shop- Paul Wilt Homes, Botkins. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Botkins, and a life member of the K of C, Council #1272, Wapakoneta. He was a member of the Botkins Volunteer Fire Department and formerly served on the Botkins City Council. He also volunteered with the Civil Defense. An avid Cincinnati Reds fan, he enjoyed tinkering, fixing things and collecting hats. He supported his grandchildren by attending their sporting events and other activities.
Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Botkins, the Rev. Patrick Sloneker officiating. Burial will follow in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Botkins.
Calling is 2-8 p.m. Tuesday and 9-9:45 a.m. Wednesday at Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home, state Route 501, Wapakoneta, where a fireman memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
