James Garman
James C. Garman, 87, a former Celina resident, passed away Dec. 17, 2013, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Louisville, Ky.
He had resided in Frakes, Ky. for the last 22 years and had recently moved to Elizabethtown, Ky.
He was born March 6, 1926, in Celina to the late Stephen Garman and Mabel May Garman Osenbaugh. He married Roseann Schmitz on Sept. 9, 1950, in Dayton, and she died Feb. 19, 2007.
Surviving are four sons, Stephen (Debbie) Garman, Elizabethtown, Daniel Garman, Celina, James T. Garman, Sylvania, and Timothy J. Garman, Celina; two daughters, Cheryl (Dan) Klaas, West Liberty, and Darla (Travis Teaford) Heckler, Greenville; a sister, Ruth Reinhart, Celina; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren with one on the way.
Deceased are a son, Scott Garman, and four brothers, Lee, George, John and Edward Garman.
He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17 and served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. After his military service, he drove a dump truck for Smalley Construction in Celina. He and his brother, John, were co-owners of Garman Brothers Service Station on Logan Street in Celina. He then worked as an independent over-the-road truck driver for Wenham Transportation, where he won an award for one million miles of accident-free driving. He later was a bus driver for Celina City Schools.
He was a member of Eagles Lodge #1291 and American Legion Post #210, and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5713, all of Celina, and was a volunteer for both veteran groups. He also enjoyed bowling, participating in both leagues and tournaments, and playing pool. He was known to never pass up a good card game. He loved amusement parks, family vacations and Christmas celebrations.
Funeral services are 1 p.m. Saturday at W.H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home, Celina, the Rev. Diane Mendelson officiating. Burial will follow at Swamp College Cemetery, Celina, with graveside military rites.
Calling is 4-8 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
