Marion organization discusses agriculture program with OSU officials

MARIA STEIN - Agriculture programs involving area farmers were discussed during the recent Marion Community Development Organization meeting.
Representatives from The Ohio State University visited recently and displayed spreadsheets they devised for calculating and comparing the amounts and types of manure nutrients generated on area farms. The spreadsheet takes into account the type, quality and size of animals as well as detailed aspects of crop rotation.
Mark Hardesty, agricultural development committee chairman, said attendees felt the approach offered real world application. He added the local Soil and Water Conservation District office might utilize the information in its Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plans.
Hardesty also reported on the ADAPT Network, which many farmers in the Grand Lake Watershed joined in 2011. The network uses federal, state and foundation grant money to scientifically determine how effectively crops utilize applied manure and fertilizer. The long-term goal of the studies is to determine the correct balance of applied nutrients with plant uptake so no excess nutrients escape into the lake. Organization members also,
• learned the banner saluting the accomplishments of local students is once more hanging on the Maria Stein Grain Company bin across from the Marion Local football field. Shelly Bruns of RB Advertising repaired the banner which had been damaged in a wind storm. Gary Poeppelman and G & L Sales rehung the banner for booster organizations in the community.
• received an update from township trustee Bob Unrast regarding completion of scheduled road projects.
• learned efforts are underway to contact soccer, softball and baseball committees regarding their willingness to donate money for playing field maintenance. The soccer group has a tradition of helping to offset such costs.
• reported the Kreuzweg "Way of the Cross" cycling pilgrimage takes place Sept. 28 as participants visit local churches in the Land of the Cross Tipped Churches. The ride begins at the Maria Stein Shrine with participants using country roads for the 20-, 36- or 45-mile routes. Registration is 7-10 a.m. with blessing of the riders starting at 8 a.m. The cost per person is $20, which includes a T-shirt. For more information, call 419-925-4532.
