Fundraising begins for new softball field

CELINA - A fundraising effort has begun for the construction of a new softball field at Westview Park in collaboration with the city.
School board members during their regular meeting on Monday approved establishing the fund to raise $200,000. Head softball coach Michelle Driggs told the board that she has been working closely with city officials to develop and implement a plan. Mayor Jeff Hazel has been very supportive and easy to work with, she added.
Driggs first approached board members in June 2012, asking for their support in the project.
"We aren't looking for any money from the board, just for approval to move forward," assistant coach Matt Driggs had said.
The coaches have been working with MAC Athletics, Inc., Minster, to construct the field. The project, estimated at just less than $200,000, would be completed in phases as the money was raised.
Nicole Driggs had said the cost of a baseline field would cost $129,000, which does not include dugouts. They would like to include brick dugouts, rubber-coated fencing and an upgraded backstop.
Board member Connie Paulus said she thinks the project is "a win-win" for the district, city, students and community members.

Board members approved the resignation of head baseball coach Drew Braun. They will advertise the position and begin a search committee for his replacement. Braun will continue as a high school science teacher for the district.
The board also approved the resignations of head start teacher Stacey Stetler and teacher assistants Sharon Knous and Stephanie Schmackers.
Head Start director Carol Schroyer said she still has eight open seats for the Franklin Building class in Montezuma and a full class in Rockford.
She also said she was able to come to an agreement with the Laurels nursing home in Rockford to continue holding classes there and include intergenerational activities with the residents. The program, which started last year, was a big success and a benefit to both the residents and the students, she added.
Also on Monday, board members,
• approved the new teacher evaluation standards. They will follow the state-recommended policy.
• approved hiring former treasurer Mike Marbaugh on an as-needed basis for $50 per hour to help new treasurer Mick Davis transition into the position.
• approved substitute teachers and various supplemental contracts.
