Auglaize County pedestrian killed while standing on U.S. 33

ST. MARYS - A 32-year-old Auglaize County man was killed after being struck by an SUV while he was standing on U.S. 33 near St. Marys at 1:30 a.m. Sunday.
Joshua J. Wingate of Cridersville was pronounced dead at the scene, west of Townline-Kossuth Road.
The driver of the 2009 Ford Flex, Rebecca MacWhinney, 34, of St. Marys, did not claim injury.
Trooper Brian Mull of the Wapakoneta post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol this morning said authorities believe Wingate may have been trying to hitch a ride to St. Marys when the accident occurred. Family members said Wingate may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time, Mull said.
The report said Wingate was standing in the westbound lane of U.S. 33 when he was struck by MacWhinney's westbound vehicle. No charges were filed; the incident remains under investigation.
Wingate's death marks the first traffic fatality in Auglaize County this year.
Also assisting at the scene were the Auglaize County Sheriff's Office and the St. Marys Police Department, fire and EMS.
