Overman hired to lead district

NEW BREMEN - Middle school principal Howard Overman is the apparent choice for superintendent.
Board of education members are scheduled to approve his hiring during their regularly scheduled meeting Wednesday night. Overman reportedly met with the board during a 2 1/2-hour executive session Dec. 28 and presented his vision for the district.
Interim superintendent John Basinger, who was to head the superintendent's search, said a brochure and job posting had been prepared in anticipation of a search prior to Overman stepping forward.
Basinger said Overman, the only staff member to express interest in the post, will bring continuity to the superintendent's office at an important time.
The board has placed a bond issue and permanent improvement levy on the March ballot for construction of a new K-8 building on the current high school campus. If the levy is approved, the district also would receive funds from the Ohio Schools Facilities Commission.
"Howard has the mindset and skills to function in the role of superintendent," Basinger said. "He knows the school district and he knows the people."
Overman will fill the vacancy created by the fall resignation of Ann Harvey, who assumed the role of superintendent of the Auglaize County Educational Service Center.
Overman has nearly 20 years of service with New Bremen Local Schools. In addition to working as a teacher, he was assistant principal prior to the retirement of longtime principal Karen Smith. The move to middle school principal occurred when the administration shifted to grades K-4 and 5-8 upon her retirement.
Wednesday's meeting agenda indicates Overman's contract will be for five years starting Aug. 1. In addition, he would be paid for any days worked during July - not to exceed 20 - at a per diem rate.
Basinger would not comment further about the hiring until Wednesday's meeting.
Overman did not return calls for this story.
