Rev. John Spatt
The Rev. John Spatt, 93, a Precious Blood priest, died Dec. 9, 2011, in the infirmary at St. Charles Center, Carthagena.
He was born Dec. 31, 1917, in Detroit, Mich., to Frank and Martha Skelnick Spatt.
Survivors are a sister, Margaret Tromblay, Warren, Mich., and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are two sisters, Agnes Spatt and Sister Mary Judith Spatt of the Sisters of Notre Dame; and three brothers, Paul, Albert and Anthony.
He entered the Missionaries of the Precious Blood in 1933 and was ordained May 9, 1943. He spent most of his life in parish ministry in parishes in Detroit, Wisconsin, Fort Wayne, Ind., Kansas and Alvada. In 1954, he was named chaplain of St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City, Kan.
He served at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Minster, from 1963 to 1973, before becoming pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Montezuma, during which time he served in the leadership of the Precious Blood Congregation. He became pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church, Philothea, in 1983 and retired to St. Charles in 1990.
Funeral Mass is 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Charles, the Rev. Larry Hemmelgarn officiating. Burial is at the Community cemetery.
Calling is 1-5 and 7-9 p.m. today at St. Charles, with a prayer vigil at 7 p.m.
