Built in 1875, St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Carthagena was the first church designed by local architect Anton DeCurtins. Property for the church was acquired as residents of the black settlement, established in 1835 by Quakers, were forced to leave the area, according to researcher Mary Ann Olding. Only the tower and three of the walls remain from the original structure. The church is on the National Register of Historic Places.
