Felony charges filed

A 22-year-old Celina man faces felony charges stemming from an apparent case of shaken baby syndrome.

Shane A. Schindler, 433 E. Livingston St., appeared in Celina Municipal Court this week on charges of felonious assault and child endangering. A preliminary hearing is scheduled Feb. 16 to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to present the case to grand jurors.

A 911 call placed from the Livingston Street address at 2:51 p.m. Feb. 5 requested help for a baby with breathing problems. Celina Police officers were passing by the home at the time and stopped to assist responding emergency medical personnel.

Zachery Nichols, the 2-month-old son of Allison Nichols, was taken by ambulance to Mercer County Community Hospital in Coldwater. Examination and treatment in the emergency room revealed signs of shaken baby syndrome, according to Celina Police Chief Dave Slusser.

The infant was transferred to Children's Medical Center in Dayton, where he remains in critical condition but is reportedly showing slight signs of improvement.

A subsequent investigation revealed neither the baby's mother nor a 3-year-old brother residing at the Livingston Street address were involved in the injuries to the baby, Slusser said.

Schindler, who was arrested the night of Feb. 5, remains incarcerated at the Mercer County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
