Attempted suicide nets charges against Celina man

Celina Police charged a 58-year-old man with inducing panic and obstructing official business after he attempted to commit suicide by setting fire to a cylinder of propane.

Brad L. Scheer, 420 W. Fayette St., was taken by ambulance to Mercer County Community Hospital in Coldwater and later transferred to St. Rita's Medical Center in Lima for admission. He will appear in Celina Municipal Court upon his release.

Police responded to the Scheer home at 10:08 a.m. Friday after receiving a call from a hysterical woman who feared the portable tank would explode.

Scheer was climbing down from a tree with tank in hand when authorities arrived on the scene. He reportedly failed to acknowledge their presence as he continued to work on lighting the device.

An officer fired a Taser but one of the projectile prongs apparently became caught in Scheer's clothing without making contact. A second officer approaching from the rear fired another Taser round, which incapacitated the man.

According to police reports, Scheer continued to make threats while being handcuffed, indicating he would blow up the tree, run it over with his Jeep and kill himself.

The report has been forwarded to the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office for review and possibly additional charges.
