Former nurse's aide pleads guilty to stealing patches

Rockford woman stole pain patches from nursing home residents

A former nurse's aide admitted Friday morning in Mercer County Common Pleas Court that she took pain-relieving patches - Fentanyl - from two nursing home residents.

Ashley M. McCarthy, 26, 155 E. Walnut St., Rockford, pleaded guilty to four counts of theft of a dangerous drug. As part of a negotiated agreement, the state agreed to drop seven additional theft charges.

In describing the offenses, Mercer County Assistant Prosecutor Matt Fox said she took them for personal use. Fentanyl patches are prescribed to alleviate chronic pain.
Sentencing is set for 10 a.m. on July 15. She could face up to six years in prison and $20,000 in fines, with the state reserving the right to argue at sentencing.
The administrator and nursing supervisor at The Gardens at Celina contacted Celina Police on Dec. 10 regarding patches being removed from a male and female patient over the course of two months. The thefts reportedly occurred in an area where McCarthy worked as a state tested nursing assistant.

McCarthy, who has agreed to pay restitution, is being represented by attorney Judy Koesters.
